cat grass

Question
I have bought on several occassions, that "cat grass" sold at Petsmart.  My cats like it the first day and then they don't touch it.  If I get some from outside my home (no pesticides) they love it, but then they eat a lot of it and vomit.  Do you know why they do this?  I buy dry food that incorporates greens in it...guess what, they hate it.  Thank you.

Answer
Cats don't eat grass because it's good for them. They eat it to clean out their stomachs and that is why they vomit. They eat it TO vomit. If the petgrass you buy at Petsmart doesn't work that way for them it isn't what they want or need. It's usually wheatgrass and that is not a normal grass for cats-so they usually avoid it.
So when they get the grass from your lawn, it is what they need and that is why they eat it. No one knows for sure why they do this but it could be because they do get a lot of hair in their digestive tracts and the grass helps bring that up. That and it cleans out the slime from eating raw meat (a throw back to wilder days).
None of my cats will tell me but I see them do it all the time. Eat the grass outside then go into the house and vomit on the rug.......
You know how it goes!
