Question
I am a newbie to sump and am totally lost as to how I set up!  I was using canister as it was a fish only set-up.  I purchased a berlin sump for my 55 gallon tank.  I have the over flow, pump, tubing, all that I need (as per fish store) to get going now what do I do with it?

Please Help!

Answer
Hello Michelle,

You will probably need an 'overflow' box or device to put onto your fish tank.

What happens is, water will be pumped from the sump to the aquarium.  And as you would suspect, the water will fill up and eventurally overflow the aquarium, but if you have an 'overflow' box, the water will over flow into the box, and down the drain BACK into the sump, so it will then be pumped back up to the aquarium again...

What you need to find is an overflow box that has the same amount of capacity to drain as the pump has to pump...

If it doesnt drain as fast then the aquarium WILL over flow...

There are other factors involved also, but for now, verify that you have the overflow box or the tank is 'drilled' for a drain.

then run the plumbing from the drain to the sump and from the pump back up to the tank...

After that, then you can add water and test run it.

Good luck and let me know if you have other questions, and please let me know how things work out for you
