Putting in gravel

Question
I just took out my gravel because it was old and sending my nitrate and ammonia through the roof which led to 2 dead swordtails. I currently have no gravel in and I want to put some new [gravel] in. Can I put the gravel in without upsetting the fish, and what is the best way?

Answer
Well, you shouldn't have removed the gravel you had. What you should have done is gotten a Python or similar product and done gravel vacuuming to fix this issue.

As for new gravel......set the fish up (with the current water they are in) in a bucket that's at least 5 gallon and save ALL of the water.....rinse the gravel and put it in the tank...smooth it out and put the fish and water back in.

Don't clean the filters or change the water for 2-3 weeks.
