Gas in the Fish

Question
We have a gold fish that is about 3 years old and this morning after we fed him he seems to be having trouble staying down at the bottom of the tank. Every time he tries to swim down he seems to bob right back up to the top. His top fin even sticks out the top.  I think that gas has a lot to do with this, because I have seen little bubbles coming out his mouth this morning. He doesn't seem to be in any distress, but he cannot keep himself from coming to the top. Please answer as soon as you can.  Thank you for your consideration.

Answer
Hi Christina,

Your Goldfish has Swim Bladder Disease. The swim bladder is a gas-filled organ in the fish, and by adding or removing gas from it, the fish can rise or sink. The most common symptom is the inablilty or difficulty sinking to the bottom (like your fish.) Swim Bladder disease is a bacterial infection, and treating with an anti-bacterial fish medication such as Maracyn, Melafix, or Sera Baktopur will cure your fish. Anti-bacterial medications are available at your local fish store.

Perform a 40% water change before adding medication. This will help by removing any toxins from the water.

Also, before using medication, try feeding the Goldfish a defrosted or fresh pea. Peas work miracles for Goldfish, and may actually cure the disease without medication. However, I recommend using the medication. The pea will help the treatment.

Good Luck, and I hope your fish recovers!
