Mama molly having babies.....please help!

Question
Hi Jaymie,

I was checking on my fish today around 12:30 PM. I noticed my molly had started having her babies. I had watched some videos on them having the babies but I was thinking that I possibly had another couple of weeks. Anyway, I put her in a breeder for her to finish having the babies. She had 2 before I moved her at 12:30 PM. Since I have moved her, she hasn't had anymore at all. She is still very much pregnant, you can still see the babies in her tummy. Is this normal?

I am starting to really worry about her, it has been nearly 12 hours and she hasn't had anymore of them. If this is normal, how long does this usually go on before she completes having the babies? I wanted to make sure she had completely finished having them before moving her back to the regular tank so she don't eat the babies.

Please help I don't know what to do.

Answer
April,

The first thing I would do is look for her gravid spot. If it is still there, then yes there are more babies in there. Sometimes, if a molly is stressed for some reason, she will release some of her babies, but the rest will wait until its time. It is good she is in a breeder, hopefully it is a  3 way breeder because that is safer for the babies. If you think that she should not have had the babies for a couple more weeks, then that is most likely when she will have them. Keep a very close eye on her and keep her as stress free as you can, and good luck with the babies.
