Question
QUESTION: Hey again! So I'm back and this time with a new question!Hah, I'm sure your glad to hear that(reason being i finally finished setting up my aquarium and its been running without a problem, a death or bulling for 2 weeks). In case your wondering and before i get of the subject of the 29 gallon for good, you can watch my aquarium here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syiFRfJ4CK4
Hope you enjoyed that, watched it in hd and subscribed!lol
Anyway, on to my question.I now have three aquariums (wow, didn't expect that) and now need a security/quarantine tank, this being my third and last attempted(hah)and was wondering how to set it up. What will i need? Should i use a sponge filter and if not what kind should i use?All information you can give me is greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot for all your help
Marcus

PS I already have a 20 gallon high ready in my garage with a heater but nothings setup jut waiting.

ANSWER: Marcus,

Glad to hear all is going well. The hospital tank is set up the same as any other tank. If the fish you have are tropical then you need a heater, cold water doesn't. It needs the filter and heater. No gravel or decorations, just water heater and filter. You can get any filter that is made for the size tank you have. It has to run all the time even if there are no fish in it. That tank is the easiest of the tanks. Some people cycle the tank with fish, which you can do, but I never do. My hospital tanks are all running fishless until they are needed.

QUESTION: Thanks, so i was wondering in the hospital tank should i make my own sponge filter? If yes how? Will the aquarium need a cover because i don't have one.And one last thing, in my 29 gallon i was thinking about getting those amano shrimp(you probably remember that).Anyway because the new fish i was thinking that a bigger species of shrimp would be better because the amanos may be too samll. What do you think?Should i get amanos or maybe a vampire shrimp? If neither what kind of shrimp would you recommend for my tank?Any suggestions deeply appreciated.
Thanks a lot
Marcus

Answer
Marcus,

The shrimp sounds good. Do research to make sure it is safe to have them with your other fish. The sponge filter will be just right in a hospital tank.

Things needed:

A sponge. I use the number 3 pond sponge because the pores are smaller and the fry will not get stuck in it.
 An air stone
air tubing both flexible and ridged.
 suction cups
 A pump
rubber bands. I use these because they do not corrode and I don't have to replace them often.

Get the ridged air tubing and cut it to the size you want. Since Betta's don't like the filter, I make sure the end of the ridged air tubing is above the water line. If you have fish that don't mind all the bubbles then you can cut it shorter. After I measure the sponge, and cut it, I wrap it around the ridged air tube making sure to over lap it on both sides. Once I have the sponge around the air tubing the way i want it, i keep the 2 sides together by wrapping a rubber band to keep the sides closed. Use as many as you need to keep the sides from opening up. The use the suction cups to hold the filter in place. I like to use the ones that have a ring on it. I simply put the filter through the ring of the suction cup and put it in the tank.
