Question

Oscar hiding in the ri
I have 2 oscars about 4 inches long in a 30 gallon tank and at first they got along great and would swim gracefully around the tank side by side for hours.  Now, one of the oscars is really bullying the other.  The bullied fish now just sits at the bottom of the tank hiding under a plant and rarely moving. somtimes i think he is dead cause he sits there all day.  When I open the lid to feed them, they both come swimming to the top to get food, but once it is gone, the dominent fish drives the other one away, who once again hides under his plant at the bottom.  What do I do?? Do I need to separate them or change the tank around? any information would be great.  Ps I am planning on getting a 150 gallon Pexiglass fish tank for them, but unfortunately I got hurt and work and has required knee surgery, so it may be awhile. I do have an empty 40 gallon with all accessories if all else fails I could set it up again, but I has hoping to keep them together cause at frist they really seemed to like eachother and I was hoping to breed them when they got bigger.

Answer
Hi Shayna,
What is happening is that the Oscars are getting bigger, and need more space.  The stronger one will eventually kill the weaker one.  When fish are kept in a tank too small for them, their growth is stunted, and their internal organs have no room to grow causing death.  Oscars are smart and they know this.  One Oscar needs at least a 55 gallon tank all to himself, two Oscars you must double this.  This situation will not change.  You will have to separate them before the dominated one gets sick.  He is stressed, and a stressed fish will get sick, and will die if the situation remains the same.  The Oscar is one of the most mistreated fish on the market.  Through no fault of your own, but that of the vendor who tells the customer that the fish will be fine in a 30 gallon tank.  This is untrue, and they know this.  The person gets attached, and buys a bigger tank.  It is a money making machine.  Not one Pet Store will take an Oscar back once it is sold.  It makes me so angry.  You may have two males, it is very hard to tell the difference between male and female when it comes to Oscars.  I'm sorry, but you have no choice but to separate them now.  Hoping you will find a bigger tank to house them soon...but keep in mind, they will never get along.
