Question
how do you tell the difference between male and female salvini cichlids?

1 have 3, one is about 3" and the other 2 are roughly 1.5". one of the smaller ones is more yellow than the other 2 and it also has a black spot on its dorsal fin, but the other 2 dont. i dont know if that has anything to do with it or not.

thanks

Answer
Hi Sarah,
In general, the one with the black spot is typically a female.  Other than that, there are few differences between the sexes. The female MAY get a little more red/orange on her belly at times but that depends on which population of salvini they come from -- salvini from different locations in Mexico can look quite different.
