Rainbow Fish/pink growth

Question
Hi Jaymie,

I don't know if you can answer this, but it is worth a try. I have three preocox rainbow fish in my 15 galon tank.

They get along well. They don't seem stressed, but lately, I have noticed a pink growth on the side of one of them (towards the mouth region). It almost looks like a zit that people get all the time. However, it is on my fish.

She seems to be fine. She is swimming around and eating. I don't notice any change in her behavior, but it does worry me.

I did a water change yesterday, and my water always seems to be fine when I test it. I began giving them some aquarium salt and Maracyn per the aquarium's store request yesterday. I have not noticed any change since yesterday, but I am supposed to give them the medicine for four days.

Do you have any other suggestions on what it could be?

Thank you so much.

Elisa

Answer
Elisa,
Without a picture it is hard to tell. It could be an injury to the mouth. Sometimes they can argue a bit with each other and get hurt. I would continue with the aquarium salt since it will help if its a wound. I would stop the Maracyn since we do not know if its an illness. We only treat with medication if we know exactly what the problem is. If you can, try uploading a picture so that I can see what it looks like. Since the fish is not acting any different, I am thinking it's an injury, and the salt should help it start healing.
