Question
hello ma'am, how much % of protein, carbohydrates should a racehorse as well as a trail riding horse every day?

Answer
Hello Rohit,

Thank you for your question.  The amount of protein, energy, minerals and vitamins a horse requires on a daily basis is a function of work load and body weight.  Further to that, horses of an adult body weight greater than 600kg have a different basis of requirements than those under 600kg.  The NRC Nutrient Requirements for Horses is a great resource for establishing any horse's nutrient requirements and the older version is available free online.

That being said, an average 500kg horse in full race work would require:
1004 g Crude Protein / day
34.5 MCal DE / day

and a trail horse in light work, weighing 500kg, would require:
699 g CP / day
20.0 MCal DE / day

Horses don't have a specific carbohydrate requirement, but rather a daily energy requirement.  Carbohydrates and fat together provide energy in the diet, the proportion of each used to meet energy requirements is a individual management decision.

I hope that helps.

Thanks, Corlena
