Question
This is the first time I have been asked to break in a horse . The pony I'm breaking in is 3 yrs and is ultra naughty and dosent take no for an answer . The other day I tried to lunge her and she charged at me but luckly I didn't get hurt . Some one told me they should break her in instead of me but that made me want to make this little bitting , bucking ,naughty mare a lovely lead pony for children to lean on ! So please give me some advice on breaking in a naughty pony.

Answer
Hi Kate,
The pony charged you and doesn't take no for an answer because it hasn't learned there is a price to pay for that behavior. The price is "work". I realize that you want to train this pony. However, training a horse from the start can be very dangerous. Also, it is the most important time in the horse's life. All that happens during the first stages of training will effect it's behavior for that time on. It takes alot of knowledge, experience, timing and most of all...patience to start a young horse. I'm not saying it's rocket science but, you do need the experience and know-how to get it done right to produce a productive citizen in the horse community. I realize that this is probably not the answer you would like to hear. My simple suggestion is to not try this yourself. I would send the pony to a qualified trainer who starts horses. It will get done alot sooner and get done right......most especially if you plan on making it a "child's horse"!! Think about that for a moment. How would you feel if you did the work yourself and you put a child on the pony and the child get's hurt....or worse? If it worked out you would be very proud. If it didn't????? If you still want to have a hand in training the pony, ask the trainer if you can be involved in the training so you can learn some points in the process. Some trainers are willing to do that. I encourage my customers to come out and help. I teach them proper lunging, backing, etc. I will teach them enough about training to get started. As I stated before, this is probably not the answer you want, but I feel it is the answer you need. Good luck and I hope you make the right decision.
