QuestionHello Lana D. Reinhardt:
I have a 10 year old Thoroughbred mare, which seems to be very sore in her right front ankle.
Over a year ago she developed a splint/fracture on her right front leg - just below the knee. It was from the impact of a horse kick. She has since healed fine, and has been sound for a while. However, approx. a week ago, she has been quite sore in her front ankle.
When I ride her, she trips quite a bit, and does show lameness, especially at the trot. And when I bring her back to the barn (gravel road), the soreness increases.
I have decided to give her time off for now until I discover what's up with her.
I have her hooves trimmed regularly by a lady who does the 'natural trim', which did wonders at first, but now she's often sore afterwards.
Thank you very much in advance for your advice, Bridget
AnswerHi Bridget;
Lameness that increases on firm ground is either foot or joint related, rather than soft tissue related.
Borrow a pair of Big Mac boots or something along those lines and see if that fixes the problem. If it does, then you're dealing with a foot issue. If it doesn't, then you're dealing with a bone/joint issue and will need to get some x-rays taken of that leg to determine the problem and extent and come up with a course of action.
Best wishes!
Sincerely,
Lana Reinhardt
