Question
We have a new colt born to our mare Ginger.  Annie is 5 wks old, we started from day one
handling her (brushing, picking up her feet, etc.)
However, she now has to decided to bite and kick us.  How should we handle this?

Answer
Vicki,

Now it's time to start some discipline.  If she's on a lead I would shank her, yell at her, etc. to let her know that you will simply not accept that kind of disrespectful behavior out of her.  I have a 10 wk. old filly who found out right from the start that certain behavior simply would not be tolerated.  Same as her momma.  When my little girl showed me her heels playfully I went after her and chased her around the paddock.  She's never done it since.

You're dealing with a baby.  Remember that.  She has to be trained and taught.  Behavior has to be defined as to what is good and what is bad.  She's going to test you to see what the limits are so  you need to set them and stick to your guns.
