Question
I HAVE  MINIATURE HORSE MARE AND SHE WAS PREGNANT---HUGE!!!
SHE LOST A FOAL THIS MORNING ,BUT SHE STILL LOOKS PREGNANT. THE FOAL WAS SMALL BUT IT HAD HAIR AND WAS FULLY FORMED. WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE CHANCE THAT SHE STILL HAS A FOAL IN HER?  IF THEY ARE PREGNANT WITH TWINS WHEN DO THEY USUALLY LOSE ONE? SINCE TWINS ARE VERY RARE YET I READ THAT A PERCENTAGE OF MARES GET PREGNANT WITH TWINS.IS IT VERY POSSIBLE THAT SHE OULD STILL HAVE A FOAL IN THE NEXT MONTH OR SO?

Answer
Dear Theresa,
We have a mare that births twins every year that she is bred to a certain stallion that we have on our farm. She has never lost either foal, but it seems that your mini COULD be having twins, but all foals are born with hair and fully formed. If you are really unsure you should call a vet. However mares don't loose all there weight right after birth, if there where twins the other would have also been expelled. Sometimes not however. I would just call out a vet to get and ultrasound on her. Miscarriages can also be harmfull to the mare.
