Question
Hello, I am currently looking for a horse. I want to compete in showjumping and eventing up to 1.20m. I have been and tried lots of horses and I have finally found one I like. He is 16.3hh 4 yr old WB gelding who is currently jumping 1.10m. However, I am unsure about getting a horse this young. I want to do a lot of competing, this be too much strain on him because he is so young? I also like him as is and am concerned that once he gets older he might get more strong. What do you think?
Regards
Kathryn

Answer
Hello Kathryn,

You decision depends on how badly you wish to do a lot of competing right now or how much patience you would be able to have in going slowly to allow the youngster's muscles, joints, and skill to develop.  If you want to do a lot right now, I recommend that you buy a horse that is at least 7 years old and that has had a season or two of mild jumping.

If you really like this horse, then be prepared to give him time to grow up, both physically and mentally. If you don't you could easily damage him, and instead of growing more strong, he may develop lamenesses.

Happy riding,
Dorothy
