Question
hello,
I have a female rabbit about 1 year and a half old, its been about 2 weeks literally just when I opened a new bag of pellets, she stopped eating the pellets, she eats everything else the same lots of hay, drinks water, some lettuce or parsley, and carrots, she looks fine, her behaviour is the same alert as always. So I thought maybe is the food then I bought another one and still doesn't want to eat, maybe is her stomach with hairball, I checked her and i doesn't seem to hurt anywhere, she's been eating lots of fiber and exercising, in her litter box I find everything normal, her marbles only in less quantinties since shes eating less. Since she is not eating the proper nutrients, I took the pellets and disolved with some water and been feeding her with a syringe. When I give her the food like that, she eats without a fuss, find the food delicious. So I thought maybe its her teeth, but how come she eats everything else, even her litter box, and some wood that she has to chew, although I tried everything to stop to destroy the litter box because she may swallow plastic, nothing worked, no smell seems to bother her. So since its been a while, I tried to stop the syringe method, so she can eat alone, and she just try everthing in her power to get my attention, eat about 1  or 2 pellets, and looking at me like saying aren't you going to feed me today? Can she get used to that? So now I don't know what else to do, her behaviour is really odd but stil she run, jump, give love and ask for love. What can i do? I went to your page to find some information and some veterinarian recommended but unfortunely when I tried to reach him only the consult is $150 and the consult is not financiable and in a consult they can't do much they have to do exams. Im sorry but it is extremely insane. We are in miami, expenses cost in here is extremely high, i love her very much, but ther is some people that simply cannot do much for her well being. What can you recommend and advise me to do? And what do you think is her problem?
Thank you very much

Answer
Dear Sandra,

When a bunny starts exhibiting odd, picky eating habits, my first suspicion is molar spurs.  This can make a bunny eat only certain things and not others, because it's painful to chew.

I'm in Miami, too, and I'm not sure who you called that said a consultation was $150, but that's a bit over the top.  Please try calling Dr. Kelleher at (954) 968-7171.  She is an expert with rabbit dental problems, and if she cannot figure out what's wrong, no one can.

I hope this helps.
