Question
QUESTION: dear dana,

my rabbit had or still has ear mites. he was treated with 2 injections of ivermectin, the second injection was followed 11 days later by the first one. it has been 16 days since the second injection and now his ears are clean, but i know that these parasites can be very persistent, and i was told that i shouldn't stop with ivermectin.
so i bought stronghold (revolution) for cats weighing 2,6-7,5kg and now i don't know how should i administer it correctly. my bunny weighs 4kg.
what do you advise me to do now?

best regards,
tara
ANSWER: Dear Balti,

Stronghold(selamectin, sold as Revolution in the U.S.) is an excellent remedy for mites, and we've used it with great success.  For a 4kg bunny (that's a big bunny!), we use 8-10 drops on the back of the neck/shoulder blades. The product should last about 30 days, and that should be the end of your mite problem.

Hope that helps.

QUESTION: and i administered it closer to the head than to the shoulders, can that do harm to the bunny?

Answer
Dear Balti,

It doesn't really matter where on the body the drops go, as long as the bunny can't lick them off.  They won't harm him, but since the drug works by traveling across the skin via the oil glands, it won't work well if it is ingested (and if it's anything like ivermectin, it can cause mild intestinal upset for a day or so).

So no worries.
