Question

Benji bun
Hi there,

I have a 3 and a half month old miniature lop called Benji who i absolutely adore, but recently he's been getting a bit too adventurous for his own good!

He has a large playpen which attaches to his cage in my bedroom and has full access to both at all times, when i'm in the room he's also allowed out there. The problem is, he's obviously getting bigger and is now managing to jump straight over the 2 foot high playpen into the room when i'm not there. I'm not really sure why he's doing it, but mainly i'm unsure how to stop it without keeping him in his cage while i'm out , which i know he doesn't like. Any ideas?

Many thanks :),
Ellis

Answer
Hi,

you need to get exercise pen gates that are at least 30 inches or 36 inches high.  Most rabbits can find a way to make it over a two-foot high gate.  Make sure there is nothing near the gates that he can use as a 'stepstool' to give him extra height to jump the higher gates.

Your local pet supply store should have x-pens that are 8-panel, 30-36 inch high steel gates you can arrange like a fence.

Also keep in mind at his age, he will be hitting sexual maturity shortly, he will be circling and honking around your feet, and he may spray you with urine (it's affection, not anger).  You will then need to schedule a neuter with a good rabbit vet (not any old vet).  If you need to find a good rabbit vet (he will need an annual exam anyway so it's good to get one now) start here:

to find a House Rabbit Society recommended vet near you.
