Question
I'm looking to adopt a pair of rabbits and I'm researching the differet varieties.  I came across some info about mega colon found mainly in white rabbits with spots and dark eyes.
I've never had rabbits before, so I wouldn't know how to deal with this mega-colon. I'm thinking I probably shouldn't get a white spotted rabbit.
Is there a specific breed of bunny that you can recommend for a first time bunny owner?

Answer
Hi C. I don't know much about mega colon. I have very limited medical knowledge. As far as breeds for beginners I suggest that you go to a rabbit show and look at the different breeds and see what you like. Some of the dwarf breed can be a bit snippy, even nippy. Netherland Dwarfs, Dwarf Hotots, and Britania Petites to name a few. However the Jersey Wooly {2-3 pounds}, Holland Lop {3-4 pounds} and Mini Rex {3-4 pounds} are usually very docile and lovable. The Mini Lops {6 pounds or so} are also very gentle. Some of the giant breeds are some of the most easy going but they are big and heavy. There are more mini rex, lops and Jersey woolies shown by youth than anything else I think. They have to be gentle or the kids would find something else. Broken pattern rabbits {white with black or other color spots and markings} are some of the most popular colors at the shows. Again if there was a big problem people would be showing something else. Go to a show and talk to the breeders. I am absolutely sure you will find just the breed that you want. Check out the American Rabbit Breeders Assn. site and look for shows. Find your state and check out what show is close to home.  Let me know what you decide on. Pat
