Question
Our Rabbit has twice been treated using Panacur for the E.Cuniculi parasite. The second treatment was for 30 Days. After stopping the treatment the rabbit is again affected by paralysis after about 1 week. Has panacur been used to treat E.Cuniculi on a permanent basis, if so what would be the affect of this long term treatment

Answer
Dear Emma,

Unfortunately, we're all still on the "cutting edge" of treatment of E. cuniculi with fenbendazole, and no one really knows what the long-term effects are.

The only known problems with the benzamidazole drugs are certain types of anemias, but these are known for certain only in *birds*, not mammals.  So far, there are no confirmed cases of anemias caused by fenbendazole (Panacur) in rabbits or any other mammals.

I do know of people who have had rabbits on Panacur for many months, and so far there have been no problems.  If the choice is between paralysis and unknown side effects...well...it's difficult to choose, but a decision only you, your vet, and your bunny can make.

I hope this will help.
