rabbit with diarrhea

Question
I just got a new bunny, Pumba, and the day after I brought her home, I started to notice that she smelled funny.  eventually, I figured out that she had feces caked to her rear end and was having really bad diarrhea.  She has since been eating only timothy hay and a tiny bit of banana (ive heard that the potassium is good to help their recovery), and has been drinking a water solution with a little sugar, salt and baking soda (I called a veterinarian and this was their recommendation).  She is eating and drinking fine, and even runs around like a healthy bunny, but she continues to have this diarrheal discharge.  I wanted to know your advice for this situation.

Also, and quite bizarrely I might add, I cannot find ANY genitalia on my bunny.  I have located her anus, due to the diarrhea, which is round and raised.  As far as I've seen in pictures and with my other rabbit, this is not normal for it to be raised like that.  Have you ever encountered this before?

Thank you!

Answer
Hi Alana. First lets discuss the genitalia situation. It may be that the anus area is swollen from the diarrhea causing the area to be raised and covering the genital opening. It is also possible that your rabbit could have a deformity of some type. I would take her back to the vet and have him look at her. Has he ran a coccidia check? If not, I would definitely have that done. That would be my first thought as to cause of constant diarrhea. If this is the cause, your vet will give you some meds to give her. While she is taking the meds you should wash the cage and living quarters down often with a 10% ammonia and water solution. That and the meds should take care of the problem. Let me know how things work out.    Pat
