arthritis in an aging rescue pig

Question
I resuced an overweight inactive pot belly pig from a home a few months ago. she already had problems with her leg, one in particular from rolling down a hill at her previous owners house ( she was chained to a cinderblock and fell over the hill) i have put her on glucosamine but I was wondering if there was a pain med. I could safely put her on. I read about one called primacy but I am not sure where to get it. I work for a small animal vets office so I could probably try to find it through us and order it but I was wondering if you had any suggestions about either diet or pain meds. I am going to start adding quaker oats to her food. I already have her on mini pig food and only feed her veggies and fruit no junk food. I would appreciate any help you could give me. I own two horses but I have never had a pig but I had to get her out of the situation she was in. thanks.

Answer
Hello,
As you work for a Vet office I would suggest you have your Vet suggest what kind of pain killer will work best for your situation.
I have used plain aspirin before but I am not a Vet so please do your research before trying it.
As far as feed....I have not found a Pot Bellied Pig feed that works well and does not put on unwanted pounds.
I have tried them all over the years and I have ended up with unwanted weight gain.
The one feed that that does give all the nutrition they require and does not put on unwanted weight is Infinity Plus.  The adult Chow and the Vitamin/Mineral Supplement will provide 100% of the nutritional needs and not make them gain unwanted pounds.
I would also really cut back on the fruits as they can have extra calories that you really don't want while dieting.
Also....no grass.  Grass can have upwards of 36% protein depending on the time of year and kind of grass.
You can find the Infinity Plus Products at royaldandie.com.
You might also try the Topical Coat and Skin.  It can be put on the feed.  It will help make help with joint pain as it is an antinflamtory as well as moisturizer.
Good luck,
Patty
