Question
Hello,I have a question about my five month old mini potbelly pig. Is it alright for her to eat acorns? She absolutly loves them first thing when she goes outside she starts snacking on them. she has not gotten sick from them or anything. I just wanted to make sure that she would not gain excess weight from eating them or anything. I live in the woods with tons of oak trees so we have plenty of acorns scatterd across our yard.
Thank You,
Elizabeth

Answer
Too many acorns, like too much of any food, will make a pig fat. Fortunately, acorns are a seasonal thing, after a few weeks, all the acorns will be gone. Oak trees go through cycles, some years they have a bumper crop of acorns, other years, just a few. Squirrels adore acorns and will likely clean up many acorns before your pig has a chance to find them. If piggy is doing fine weight wise, then there's probably nothing to worry about.

If piggy is gaining too much weight too quickly from the acorns, then you'll have to limit her access to them. One way is to set up a pen and confine her to that area, another option is to walk through and pick up most of the acorns before letting her out.
