Pot Belly Pig and her outside bedding

Question
My 1 year old potbelly pig gathers straw in her mouth from around our outdoor pig shelters (we have 2 xlarge igloos and a 5'W x 8'L x 5'H insulated pen) and either 1.  takes the straw into one of the two igloos to add to what's already there or, 2.  gathers the straw in her mouth and deposits it in various locations around the yard - she'll do this several times a day.  I was wondering why she does this? The straw is changed frequently and is clean and dry. P.S. - she is spayed.

Answer
Your piggy is nest building. Each pig has his or her own unique personality, and some pigs (male or female, fixed or intact) just enjoy building nests.  Pregnant pigs are notorious nest builders, and sometimes choose very strange objects for their nests.

Nesting is a good activity for your pig because it gets her exercising. Just for fun, try giving her some other nest worth items and see what she does with them. Larger sticks, blankets, pillows, etc. Once, one of my pigs spent the day disassembling a bale of straw, and building a straw tunnel. Then, she managed to take a piece of landscape fabric off a shelf, unfold it, and spread it neatly over the top of her tunnel! Your pig might enjoy building her own nest.
