Question
We bought a 6 month old potbelly  pig. How do we get her use to us? She won't let us pick her up to bring her outside

Answer
Give her a safe space of her own, with a bed, water dish, litter box and a few toys. A closet, bathroom, laundry room or small bedroom works well.

Sit on the floor of her safe space with her. Have a few treats or pellets in your hand. Speak softly, let her approach you at her own pace.

Always tell her what you're going to do before you do it. For example, say Touch piggy ear before you touch her ear

At mealtime, sit on the floor with the dish in your hand or the food in your hand. Move slowly, speak softly, let her come to you, let her eat the food from your hand or dish.

A little while later, go back in again with a few more treats. Feed her next meal the same way. It should not take very long for her to approach you.

It might take a little bit longer for her to get used to being touched. Pigs love belly rubs and, silly as it sounds, being gently poked or stroked with an ordinary fork. So try gently tickling her tummy or very gently stroking her with a fork. Always tell her what you're going to do before you do it.

Once she is comfortable coming up to you, you can start harness training. Harness training is easy when pigs are little, and they will remember their training for their whole life.
