Question
Hi I have written you before about breeding brother and sister, and i just called the person i was going to get the baby pig from and he said that the mothers are the same but not the dad's.
He also said that the blood lines in pigs run through the fathers. is that true?

What happened is he bought the mom and she was already pregnant, and I got one of those baby's.
And now she's pregnant again with one of his boys he's had, and i want to get that baby, if there's not gonna be any birthing problems.

What is your advice about this?

Thanks             AshLee

Answer
Hi,

If two pigs share the same mother but have different fathers they are half-brother and half-sister.

I spoke with my friend Priscilla Valentine of Valentines Performing Pigs. Her pig Nellie has been featured in dozens of commercials, and several of her pigs have been on Pet Star and the birth of one of her piggy litters aired on Animal Planet.

She strongly advises against breeding animals this closely related. The registries document bloodlines through fathers simply because it's easier that way (could get really confusing otherwise), but genetics aren't so simple. Genes come from both parents.

You can visit Priscilla's website here  www.valentinesperformingpigs.com

And write to her at Nelliestar@aol.com she will be happy to give you more specific information.

Also, Lana Hollenback, director of Pigs As Pets Association, has considerable experience with inbred pigs from accidental breedings, and she can give you more info as well.
