Lesbian rats?

Question
Hi

I am a very confused rat owner. I own 2 pairs of females. We have been introducing them slowly with the aim of getting them all into one big cage. They now seem to get on OK most of the time, but the younger ones are jumping on top of the older ones, pinning them down and thrusting as if they were trying to reproduce. The two younger ones were rescue rats (about 5 months old.) Is it possible that they are neutered males? Would they still have such urges? In that case, could they still all live together?

I have never seen this behaviour before, any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Katie

Answer
There's no such thing as homosexual rats, the girls are displaying perfectly normal dominance behavior. As long as there are no screeches of fear coming from any of the girls you should just allow it to play out so that they can establish a pecking order. Once this is done there will be peace in the rat cage.
