Question
Hi Sandra. I was doing some internet reading the other day and saw a rat medication usage chart, I got confused on the description of baytril (you can really tell I'm dumb), can the injectable form of baytril be given orally too or the oral form is different from the injectable? I was just curious...Thanks for reading this :)

Phoebe

Answer
Hi Phoebe

You can take alot of medications that are used as injectable orally and yes,the injectable baytril is one of them that can be given orally, although it is disgusting and bitter and it must always be mixed with something palatable.

I have used chocolate ice cream (a dab of melted ice cream is better than not having them take the medicine, so it is ok for them to have the sugar, they will love you for it!!) and I have also used flavored syrups for ice cream such as strawberry flavored. Avoid peanut butter, however, because it is thick and gooey and can stick in their throat. It should never be fed to rats unless it is thinned out with water. Afrt that I have purchased an entire bottle of it before since it lasts much longer than the elixirs (they only last 14 days before they expire) and if you get it like that, you need a syringe with a needle to draw the solution out of the bottle (there is a rubber stopper) in order to dispense it, but again, it lasts a long time.

My vet gave me the script so I can always have it on hand when my rats start with their myco flare ups and baytril is warranted. I also had a rat that was put it on for the remainder of her life because she had chronic myco and no sooner did she get off the baytril, she would relapse, so she was taken it just once a day to hold the myco at bay. The injectable was, of course, much more economical since it lasts so long. The entire bottle was $45 if I remember correctly.

Hope this helps and your NOT dumb!!

Sandra
