Question
QUESTION: I know that there are some kinds of canned treat that are ok for pet rats, i.e. canned tuna, canned oysters, canned corn, canned peas, etc. What I am trying to find out is if it is alright for them to have canned green beans. I know that raw beans are not good for them but am wondering about the cooked/canned green beans. Thanks for your input, I have 11 rats and am always looking for something new to treat them with. Dot

ANSWER: Yes the canned green beans are fine.  Some rats dont seem to fancy them though but all rats are different.  They may produce some gas too.  Beans make humans have gas (sometimes) and same for rats.

It can be comical if you have never heard a rat ...well, you know....

LOL!!

QUESTION: LOL, never heard it and was not aware that they could. One more question, (I am relatively new at this even though I have so many) I am wanting to give them canned pineapple. Can they have that? Also, someone told me that almonds are not good for them, but I give them Brown's Tropical Carnival food as a mix in with their regular rat diet and it has almonds. I already pull out the hard corn from their food, should I be pulling the almonds as well? Thanks, Dot

Answer
Hi

Almonds are loaded with fats so no, they are not that good for rats.
Have you looked at my website, Critter city?  The link is on my profile. In the menu are tons of links to pages with lots of info, from proper diet to health issues and everything new rat owners are still learning about, including porphyrin (the red tears or red mucus from their nose often mistaken for blood) There is even a list of foods that are ok and not so ok for rats, too. I know it can be confusing when your newer to rat owning, or even a veteran, as to what website has the proper info. Infact, heck, its hard to even know when your vet is right or off his rocker! LOL   Many vets are not educated in rat care, some admit it, others wont and yet they are so off base when it comes to rat care they are more than 50& RESPONSIBLE for failure for the rat to recover from their ailments because they are very limited as to what they know about rat health problems. Most of them learn the basics and just have a one track mind, often thinking everything they has is myco and every thing that they have  gets treated with baytril only.  It can be frustrating!

I am on vacation (last day today) on an unfamiliar computer so I am scared to go find the link to my site for fear I will lose this page (I am semi computer illiterate!!) but again, if you want, go back to my profile on here and find the link to critter city or even maybe google it? Not sure if that would take you there or not.

best regards!
