Roof rats

Question
I have a couple questions:

I live in southern Oregon and where we are we get roof rats.
I have never owned rats but will be getting my first 2 ratties from a breeder when they are ready to go to a new home..
I know SDA (Sialodacryoadentitis virus)can be transmitted through air.

So my question is: (1) If roof rats has SDA will my pet rats have a higher risk of catching the virus?
The roof rats has never gotten inside the house. We can just hear them running around up there.

(2) Every time we come back from shopping at the pet stores do we have to take a shower, change cloths and stay away from our ratties for 3 hours just so they cant catch SDA?

thank you

Answer
I'm not sure if roof rats commonly carry SDA, but even if they do your rats should probably be just fine as long as they don't have direct contact with the rats.

When coming back from a pet store you're usually fine to just avoid your rats for about 2 hours, presuming you were just there shopping.  If you did actually handle animals there you should change your clothes and at least wash up to the elbows.

 Hope that helps!
