Question
hi i got a rat from Petco and it turned out to have a respiratory infection. I took her back and they are now treating her. When I get her back should I quarantine her from my other rat? If so for how long?

Answer
Yes  she should be kept away for three weeks.  I am only hoping petco is not doing your rat harm. I have heard horror stories from others that have also allowed Petco to treat their rats that were newly purchased.  How long have they had her  there treating her?  Proper treatment for respiratory infection is 30 days on baytril and doxycycline.   I would have taken her to the vet and demanded that they reimburse you. With enough persistence, they would have complied, esp since they sold you a rat that was sick.    I would go in and check on her right away. I have even heard how they have put all the sick rats in one tank which is bad for rats to start with, but males and females alike, with the uneducated belief that the males are too sick to get the sick females pregnant.  Talk about irresponsible.  And yes, some people have brouhg  back pregnant females because of this. The person caring for your rat is probably a 16 year old that is working there only to pay for car insurance.  Your rat may be sitting there day and night with no real interaction from humans at all when she needs to be comforted more than anything.   I am sure you had no idea about what goes on behind closed doors but unless you say she is staying at an exotic vet clinic (and with that I will gladly eat my left foot) I cant believe that she is getting the best of care that she could be getting by seeing a vet and being with you at her new home.
