Question
Alright, I will start off by telling you that I am a rat LOVER. I currently have 2 girls and had 2 before them.
Last night I went outside of my apartment ( I live in the Mountains) and low and behold there was a white and tan hooded rat digging in the flower bed. My first thought was,"where are my rats," and my second thought was, "that is neither of my rats!" My boyfriend and I watched her for a little while and then we decided to catch her in my rat's travel cage. One hour and half a slice of bread later we lost her under our porch, gave up and went back inside. 10 mins later we were about to leave for walmart when we spotted a solid light brown on top and white underneath male rat. So, of course we set out to catch him and this time we were successful. I set him up in an extra cage I have and he spent 2 hours eating and then got so sleepy he couldn't stay awake any longer. We got him out today and rinsed his fur off in the bath tub and the let him get acquainted with us on the bed where he curled up and let us rub his neck and back, he was just a super sweet heart.
Well, I went outside again tonight and found a solid white albino rat trying to sneak in my door, I guess the boy, who we named splinter, sent her out a rattie memo.
When all was said and done I had caught 3 more rats, all girls, one solid brown with a white stripe on her stomach, the albino, and the hooded white and tan I had seen last night.
I now have 6 total rats in my apartment and am at a total loss of what to do with the newcomers! I obviously cannot keep them, apartment living is interesting enough with two rats in the same cage, but now I have 3 cages going on. I don't feel comfortable putting the new girls with my girls because a) they are "wild" and b) they may have fleas or be sickly.
My plan is to call our local pet store tomorrow (we have a total of one in a 2 hour radius.) and see if they will take them? However I don't have much hope that they will.
For the record I caught two of them by putting bread in the back of the cage and then closing the door once they went in to get it and I caught the other two by giving them a piece of bread and scooping them up in a towel. Neither my boyfriend nor I have been bitten by them and they have never been even remotely aggressive towards us which makes me wonder just how wild they really are, but then again I have no prior experience with wild rats, only domesticated.
Do you have any suggestions as to what I could do with them? Any advice at all would be appreciated, I can't believe what I have fallen into but I'm glad that it was me (someone with a soft spot for rats) and not the apartment owners. Thank you in advance!

Answer
For starters, where in NC are you?  I am also in NC as well (Charlotte area) but remember these rats are NOT wild, they are domestic rats that someone dumped off.

DO NOT CALL THE PET STORE!  They will end up selling them as feeder rats. Trust me.  I can try to help find a rescue since I live in the same state as you.
