Sun Conure behavior

Question
I have a sun conure who is 15 years old. He has been with me all 15 years. He is in a little cage when I am home and a very big one both acrylic during the day. He grabs onto the newspaper shakes it and spits up his food and then eats it. I only give him now pellets from pretty bird and seed balls for he kept doing this with fruit etc and this is the only thing he can eat. My neighbor is a bird breeder and told me not to worry for she thinks it is mating season related. I did take him to the vet and she did not find anything she didn't do blood tests. When I took him in I didn't know what he was doing until I saw him doing this. He has been doing this for about 5 months. Should I be concerned? Thanks.

Answer
You can try using a different cage material if you'd like, or add shreddable toys to his cage. It is most likely from boredom and mating season. Leaving a TV or radio on might also help to keep him occupied. Just make sure you stay away from newspaper with colored ink, and preferably no ink at all. You can try liquid fruit juice to see if that will reduce some mess, walmart sells fruit nectar in cans in the juice isle that all of my birds love. I wouldn't be too concerned though, a lot of birds make messes just to entertain themselves or to see their owner's reaction.
