Question

Babies
Dear Natasha,
one of my mouses(big mama)had babies two days ago.(yay) i think there are about 10? I also have another pregnant female in the cage with her.(cinnamon) The problem is...it looks like Cinnamon is doing all of big mama's work. I even think shes feeding them. Is that even possible? Is it bad for Cinnamon to be feeding Big mama's babies when she has some of her own coming? speaking of that. should i separate both mommy's? Because i heard she will disown the smaller babies? I also have one more Question(sorry) when can i start holding/taming big mama's babies? thanks!
-Sara

Answer
Dear Sara,

It's not uncommon for a mouse to nurse another mouse's babies.  When Cinnamon has her own, she will probably pay attention to them.  It's best to just let them work it out.  If it seems like Big Mama isn't nursing anybody at all-- is never in the nest-- that's a problem, because Cinnamon won't have enough milk (unless she has a small litter).  But any time Big Mama is in the nest she will be nursing, because they will simply attach themselves!

I've had 3 litters in the same nest, and everyone grew up healthy and strong.

Babies can be held safely at 7 days.

Have fun!
