mice in heat

Question
Hi there
Ok, so I've always wondered, and then found out that indeed female mice get sexual urges to mate, during which time they're "in heat."  I still have to find out more about this, but anyway, I have two female mice.  And, this is indeed a real question, not just joking, I am wondering if they could get sexually frustrated without mating with a male mouse.  I really do care about their general wellbeing.  Is this possible, and any advice or thoughts?

Answer
Dear Mel,

Female mice are in heat every few days and if a male is put into the cage they go into heat.  I always have all female mice and they are fine and don't seem to mind their celibacy.  All they need is love from their mousie buddies and from you and they will be content.  Females will also live longer and be healthier if they do not have babies.

As an observation, considering how male mice have to practically bend the females in half and bite their ears  to keep them from escaping mating, while the females squeak their heads off, I wonder if females actually have a lot of urge to mate...  I've always thought if I were a female mouse I'd prefer to be celibate!

As a bit of advice, I always have three rather than two girls in a cage so that when one dies the one left doesn't get too sick and depressed.  Then I replace the third mouse within a few weeks and thus keep the number to three.

Other questions are always welcome.

squeaks n giggles,
