Question
Hi, I just bought a new mouse today and they told me that she was a she but I am a little scared that she may be a he. if that is the case I will have to separate him from my three girls. I have had to do this before with a previous mouse when i thought it was a girl but wasn't when I separated him from the female, who also had his babies, he got depressed, and i do not want my new mouse to get depressed if she turns out to be a he. Is there anyway to prevent him from feeling lonely, if it turns out to be a him.

Also, I know that mice can be infertile, I was wondering if there was a sure way to tell if they can have babies or not.

Answer
Dear Sara,

This link should help you to sex your mouse:

You should separate them until you figure it out, unless you want three litters of mice! It may be too late already.

It's true and sad that male mice have to live alone, and that that is hard on them. There are two things you need to do. First, keep the cages (wire, if possible) next to each other. Mice do communicate between cages. I know this personally because once in my menagerie, when a mouse in one cage died, the three mice in the next cage over all got depressed (which I measured by weight loss). Second, a male needs extra love. A single mouse should get at least an hour  of people time a day. You don't have to give him your attention the whole time-- let him sit on your shoulder while you walk around (make sure he balances well), or in your shirt while you read or watch TV. Try to be very hands-on with him-- petting and massaging him.

Have fun with them all!

squeaks n giggles,

Natasha
