I hurt my pet mouse; will she hate me?

Question
I hurt my pet mouse by accident. Well I put my pet mouse inside the cage and I slowly closed it. But my mouse ran so fast toward the opening. And next thing you know, I closed the door on her nose. Then she like jumped in the air and squeaked. Then she looked at me scared. And went quickly to bed. I am so scared. I don't want her to die or hate me. Please help!

Answer
Dear Michelle,

Chances are she'll get over it (there was no blood on her nose, right? If there was she must go to the vet). Next time you open the cage offer her a very special treat like a piece of buttered popcorn, or a very thin smear of peanut butter on a bit of cracker (*very thin*  because mice can choke on peanut butter), or a bit of cheese.  Approach her slowly and talk to her softly. I don't know how tame she  is in general, but if she is usually easy to hold she will be again soon. If she is already timid, though, it might take a while for her to regain trust. Keep up with the treat and soft talking a few times if it doesn't just take once. Mice are generally pretty forgiving, though they might remember to be scared of something. This might teach her not to rush the cage lid when you are closing it.

I hope everything is OK and she is OK. Best of luck. And you're not the only one who has hurt their mouse by accident. Don't feel bad. There was one tonight which fell down and died : ((.  Yours is just a little scared.

squeaks,

Natasha
