Tetracycline for Mice

Question
Hi! I'm Justin and I know I asked you a question back in April or so about my mouse when she had a URI (or something like that).  I did end up taking her to the vet and she got better.

However lately she got sick again (sneezing, occasionally of clicking and lethargy whenever her nose was blocked), and even though I took her to the vet whatever they had her on wasn't enough and unfortunately she's gotten sick again.  As I am your typical college student I really can't afford repeat visits to the Vet, so I decided to take your advice and get tetracycline for her.  Unfortunately, the only variety available locally was the 500mg powder packets.  How do you suggest I go about giving this to her and measuring it?  Maybe half so it's like the 250mg capsules?  As well, I know you typically suggest that you put the equivalent of half a capsule every two days into a smaller water bottle, however I've always had a water bowl for her (to be more precise, it's more like a water container stuck on the side of a cage, like what a bird would have).  What do you suggest for this, considering it's open to the air?  I've linked a photo of what it looks like for reference  (http://i.imgur.com/cOapF.jpg and no, that's not all of her cage, she has a lot more space than that little part.).  Sorry if this is similar to past questions, but I didn't want to take any risks with my little girl :(  Thank you so much in advance!

Answer
Dear Justin,

The Tetracycline may not be strong enough. It is not as strong as what a vet can give you. I am guessing the vet gave you Baytril. If that did not work, a vet would usually give you another antibiotic at the same time, either Amoxicillin or Doxycycline, depending on whether they think she has a secondary infection or a bad case of myco.

Although I can answer your question  about the Tetracycline-- I suggest mixing 2 1/2 cups of water with 500 mg powder and storing it to refill every day-- I think the best thing to do is call the vet, who has already seen the mouse, tell them she still isn't well, and see if they will prescribe further medication without a visit.  There aren't a lot of different treatments for mice, and they have already seen the mouse, so it seems they ought to help you out.

Best of luck & well wishes to the mouse.

squeaks,

Natasha
