Mice mites to other rodents

Question
I've recently found out that my mouse colony has become infected with mites. I'm already working on treating them. However, they are housed in a room that contains rodents of other species, specifically guinea pigs and chinchillas. Is it possible for the mouse mites to transfer to these other species? Or are they like lice and specific to a single host species?

Answer
Dear Kelly,

Although mouse mites would probably prefer mice, they could decide another animal was tasty too. I recommend you just treat everyone with Revolution, since it is so easy to do. If you treat everyone today and change everything in the cages, which means anything that can't be washed in hot water gets thrown away or frozen for two days, you should be OK in two weeks. Sounds like a God-awful task but it has to be done.

Good luck!
