Strange Noises, Constant Sleeping

Question
Hi Tamarah,
I have had my mouse for about two months now. A few weeks ago, he began to sleep much more than usual. I assumed it was due to the cold weather, but within the week I would rarely see him! Then this past week he began making strange noises with every breath he took that were unlike his usual chatter sounds. After thoroughly cleaning his cage, his symptoms cleared up within a few hours. Today, (only two days later) the noise was back. His breathing was slower than usual and he seemed to be dry-heaving. He was fine as soon as I removed him from his cage, and is back to his loud chattering and chirping. He has also been drinking less water and having diarrhea. Do you know what the problem could be? Thanks!

Answer
Hi Odette,

Mice do not typically make chattering or chirping noises, which makes me concerned that he may have an upper respiratory infection, or URI, which can cause difficult breathing and a noise that many people describe as a clicking or chattering sound.  I am also worried about his drinking less and his loose stools.  Is there a vet in your area who works with pocket pets like mice?  Even though mice are small, they do sometimes need the help of a professional who can see them in person and help you give them the best care and, when necessary, the most appropriate medicine.

This is a situation in which I think a vet would be your best option.  URIs are easily fixable but do need medicine or they can become very serious.  If you cannot see a vet, please write me back right away and I will help you find and use a more general antibiotic like tetracycline.

Hope he feels better soon!
