Taking Iggy to the Vet

Question
Hello, my Iguana Maize is 9 years old. I recently took her to the vet for a check up and to have a burn she got a few months back looked at because although we had cared for it I didn't feel as though it looked right. At the vet, just like I knew she would, she got extremely aggressive. She was fine on the way there -I put her in a pillowcase so she couldn't see what was going on and let her lay in a big tupperware bin with no lid- even when we were in the office, she was wary because she was unfamiliar with her surrounds but was good. The vet came in, all hell broke loose. He took blood, called a week later and told me her white cell count was up, so I have been giving her injections of antibiotics every three days in her arms for the last two weeks. Saturday she has to go back to see how the burn looks -looks great- and to take her blood again to see where the white cell count is. Well, my question is, although I know that it is pretty much unavoidable that she is going to get very aggressive when we are there -it took three of us to hold her when they took her blood last time- but if I could find a way to keep her eyes covered the whole time do you think she may be a little more calm about the situation? Any suggestionS?

Answer
Hi Denise,
Amazing how strong they can be, isn't it?
Hopefully, you got the cause of the burn found and fixed...if it was due to a heat rock, they can and are deadly as they over heat, malfunction and igs really cannot sense heat from underneath them.
If you are able to, you can take a small sock and cut the toe end out, and slip her head into that, which will cover her eyes.  What I do for my not so nice ig is to also wrap her in a towel to cover her feet and expose only the area needed. Believe it or not, that's what I have to do to get her from her inside habitat to her outside habitat...on the way to the vets and at the vets she is the most innocent ig you ever want to meet!!
You did well with the pillow case and bin.
Hope her infection is gone. Many times after having antibiotics they will have a lack of appetite due to the needed gut bacteria being lowered from the antibiotics.  To help that you can give her one of the products below.
The reason for one of the below products is to replace the iguanas gut bacteria(probiotics) which are needed for digestion. bene bac...labeled for birds, approved for reptiles.
nutri bac
acidolophliz+
or plain, human grade acidophilus......   one capsule will dose for at least 3 days in a row.
BeneBac ..most larger pet stores should carry it...especially if they have birds...
Acidophiliz+  I think  PetsMart carries it..if not....on line at www.reptilesupply.com
Some people use a tiny amount(1/2 cc or less) of live culture plain yogurt for 2-3 days, but this is only something that is recommended for healthy iguanas.
