Hermit crab mating.

Question
I have two Hermit Crabs, I have had them for a few years now.  One of them is really big.  My question is:  This morning while enjoying my coffee, we heard a strange sound coming from the cage, realizing it was the hermit crabs (we have never heard a sound from them before) I checked on them under their log.  I found them out of their shells so I figured that they were ok.  I left them alone.  When I checked on them again, I found them attached to each other.  I left them alone and was wondering what to expect next since I believe that they were mating? I have an aquarium and a big water dish and they both have food dishes.  Is their anything else that I have to do or watch for?  This is surprising to us, something we never expected.  Thank you for any feed back that you may have.   Carol Kuszniaj

Answer
Carol,  Sure enough you saw a site rarely seen. Unfortunately it will not to fruition in captivity. Have you ever sexed them. You know when you hold them up and the come out of their shells.....right behind the last set of legs on a female are two blackish dots one on either side. These are called gonopores. Just in case make sure lots of shells are available in case size difference is a problem and they may have yanked each other out of their shell, but I doubt it. There is nothing you can do but give them some privacy.....keep an eye on them here and there. Also, when the female is pregnant sometimes they streak (idk why). If she has small red dots on her abdomen grab her and rinse her in some warm water tepid really and wash them away so they don't rot and cause infection. Good Luck, Tina
