long-haired guinea pigs

Question
From the pictures, she looks like a Sheltie.  She has long hair, but it does not grow down over her face.  I did not see a picture of the Abyssinian that you mentioned.

We just got a long-haired guinea pig at our camp nature center.  I am not sure of her breed, but I do have some concerns regarding her care.  Does her hair need to be kept trimmed, and, if so, how short should it be?  Does her hair need to be shampooed or otherwise cleaned or is brushing sufficient?  Are there any other particular concerns that I need to be aware of with a long-haired guinea pig?

It sounds like to me that you are refering to either a Peruvian or an Abyssinian.  You can use this link to identify your cavy.  http://www.comfycavies.com/Info%20Pages/Breeds/Breeds.htm  This does not feature ALL breeds of Cavies but will show you the most common.  Depending on which one you have will depend on what care it will need for the coat.  If you could get back with me and let me know which looks most like your cavy, I'll be glad to assist you further.

Answer
If what you have is a sheltie, I would suggest brushing it at least once per day.  Bath it only as needed.  Use baby shampoo because you do not want to dry their skin out.  Give plenty of fresh water and aside from their regular food offer fresh veggies and fruits.  Lettuce however is not good for them.  Also, be sure never to use cedar bedding for them.  It causes breathing problems and over time will shorten their life.  Hope this helps.
