my guinea pig is biting and scratching himself more than normal?

Question
I've had my guinea pig Wicket for just about a year and lately he's been biting and scratching at himself a lot. I haven't noticed any bugs on him and he's acting completly normal other than that. I wonder if it's stress from a recent move? Also... he's in a different area than before, he's sort of got his own room in our office. He's actually been a lot more friendly since we are in here a lot.

Also... i was planning on expanding his cage to a C&C cage with enough room for two... do you think he'd be ok with a young boy? i was thinking that as long as they have hiding places and a place to get away from each other they'd be fine... but i'd like an expert opinion.

Answer
Hello Renae,

Most mites you won't see. If he is scratching excessively, he should see a vet. Even if it isn't mites, it may be an early fungal infection. It could be a reaction to stress but it is much easier (and often cheaper)to take care of mites and fungus if it is caught early. As for a friend, he will likely be fine. Introduce them on neutral ground. A younger boar is definantly a better choice. Good luck!
