Dwarf Tank Smell

Question
Hello,

My Dwarf tends to stink up his glass tank a lot quicker than when we first got him. He's 9 months old. His stink is more than before and takes hold much quicker after cleaning. I usually use Vinegar and water to clean, but whew!! Any other suggestions?

Answer
Dear Johanne,
thank you for your question.
If you clean the cage very thoroughly every time, the hamster will go crazy because it doesn't smell of him any more. Don't use vinegar every time, just hot water, clean the toys only when it's absolutely necessary and leave about 1/3 of the bedding in there. That way, the hamster will recognize his smell and won't scent mark everything all over again.

Hemp or flax bedding (often used for horses) is a lot more smell absorbing than wood shavings, ut it needs to be mixed with hay and maybe some small twigs to make it diggable.
I hope I was of some help to you
