Question
Hi, i have had a ferret now fot 4 yrs, he has somehow gotten into bleach and i dont know what to do, i have called some local clinics and they said to put him down, but i dont want to do that until i talk to a real professional still knowing that he might have a chance. What should i do?

Answer
I'm so sorry to hear about your ferret getting into that stuff.  Accidents like that are so difficult, and bleach in particular is very corrosive.  What you should do depends on the quality of life for your little one.  How much he ingested or skin contact is a large factor, and if it was at all dilute.  Bleach will burn any biological surface it touches, including the esophagus and mouth.  It is also a poison so it could have other damaging effects based on the amount that was ingested.   It would be a good idea to call the ASPCA animal control poison center.  They would be able to help you with the specific toxic properties to bleach for ferrets, and then work with your vet by opening a case file.

Make sure to wash your pet well if it spilled on his skin.  This will dilute the bleach and lessen the burns.  I am honestly more worried about the internal damage, which is why I recommend calling the poison control.

Depending on the quality of life, it is not inhumane to euthanize.  If your little guy is suffering and has a poor prognosis it is certainly an option.  It is great that you are doing everything you can to help him, and that's really  all your little one can ask for.

Best of luck!
