bumps on ferrets ears

Question
My 2 year old BEW male got out of out house monday night. We looked for him outside for hours. It was cold and raining for 2 days, then in the 70's for 2 days. Tonight, friday, he came back home. We were elated! When I examined him he has these bumps all around, on and behind his ears. They look like the size of a sesame seed and seem to be embedded into his skin. Do you have any idea what these are?

Answer
Hello Dawn,

It's wonderful that your kid found his way home.  You are EXTREMELY lucky.  The majority of ferrets that run away are never found :(

Bumps on the ears/face/body are often allergic reactions.  Most animal show their allergies as skin irritations rather than respiratory problems as people do.  He probably was exposed to something that didn't quite agree with him outside.

Allergic reactions usually pass within 24 hours.  If the bumps are still present, you might want to take him to your veterinarian for an evaluation.  This may be a good idea anyway, since PLENTY of things could have happened to him on his adventure, and it is ALWAYS the best idea to have your vet take a peek!  Also, if you notice any odd behavior, have him seen ASAP.  This includes diarrhea, vomiting, swelling (especially around the neck since it can cause difficulty breathing), annorexia, etc.

I hope this answer has helped!  Again, it is great that he came back home.
