Ferrets with Daschunds

Question
My roommate has a 5 year old dachshund. Oscar is a very cool dog and is very tolerant of my 2.5 year old son who only comes over a few days a month. My 7 year old wants a ferret. I have had them before with dogs and it was fine. my concern is the Dachshund breed. They were bred to hunt rodents and although ferrets are not rodents I wonder if Oscar would not want to hunt one! Oscar is very territorial of his room but the rest of the house is ours and he understands that. Do you know of these breeds being ok or not ok together?

Answer
A ferret would probably NOT be a good choice to be with a Dachshund. Any dog that is a hunter or terrier will naturally want to attack any small creature. They don't know the different between a rodent and a ferret, to them it's the same. Do not try to mix these two breeds, the ferret will be hurt and possibly die. Usually a gentle, larger dog, like a golden retriever, is ok around ferrets. But rule of thumb is it is never 100% safe, since a larger animal will always have the capacity to harm a smaller one. Even cats may potentially be dangerous around fuzzies. No matter what the animal mix is they will need constant supervision, so it may be best never to let them mingle in the first place.
