loud noises and guns

Question
My dog Sonny (gold ret) is very afraid of guns, gun shots and other loud noises.  We are starting some dog therapy work and looking to pass the certification tests.  He becomes so frightened that he can't concentrate on anything.

Answer
Hi Susan

You need to put Sonny on a desensitisation programme to help him overcome this.  It is a long process but is always effective if done properly and carefully.  However, you will not be ready for any tests involving gunshots any time soon, sorry!

Get a CD of gun shot noises (you can download something from the Internet).  Play it at a VERY low volume indoors, while you are present.  Sony should not react, if he does then turn it down even more.  Play with him with his favorite toy while it is on, or give him some treats.  Over a period of a few days turn it up slowly.  If at any point he reacts to it by becoming scared turn it back down.  He should begin to associate the noise with positive things if you give him good experiences when the cd is played (games/food).

Eventually you will be able to play the Cd at full volume and Sonny will not be bothered, or will simply come to you for a treat.  However, i must stress that this cannot be rushed.  If he is very worried by even a quiet sound then he may need some other support such as a DAP diffuser or even drugs from the vets.  Drug therapy can be used alongside a desensitization/counter-conditioning programme as mentioned above, but will not be effective used alone.

Good luck
