Dog Running Away

Question
Hi Kathleen,

We live on a farm and got ourselves a German Shepherd a few months ago. She is between a year and a half to two years old. She has a wonderful personality and is generally well behaved. The problem is that we are having to keep it tied up because it gets so curious that it runs away to go explore. We have a major highway nearby that we do not want it crossing. Every day it gets let loose for some excercise and it stays around as long as someone is outside with it. Any suggestions as to how to keep it home?
Thanks

Answer
The simplest and safest things is to install a fence so the dog can be outside and contained.

Other options include "Invisible Fence" or similar brand which is a boundary system and requires you to train your dog to stay in the area. http://www.invisiblefence.com/

You can search on Craigslist.org for kennel panels and fencing that often is a good buy.

Some people have success with teaching dogs the boundary areas, but the more successful are those that stay outside with their dogs.

Let me know if you have additional questions.

Good luck!
